Free Crochet Pattern: Ruffle Hearts
{31.01.20}
In celebration of February, I have been making these super quick and sweet crochet ruffle hearts!
Oh, I love them so much, I just want to add crochet ruffles to everything. They are the perfect item to make for your loved ones this Valentine’s day… I’ve been making them up in colourful Aran weight cotton yarns and I’ve had so much fun mixing up colours. But what I love most is that the heart itself is made in one piece (well you make two hearts but you know what I mean), usually, when I’ve made hearts I’ve had to fasten off and re-attach yarn to get that second curve but these are made in one piece using increases and decreases.
In honour of the month of love, I’ve written out the pattern for you to try below. I’ve added step-by-step photos but if you prefer to print your patterns there is an inexpensive Ad-free 5-page pdf available to download too, which also includes a diagram. You can purchase it here on Ravelry
As always I recommend reading the pattern fully first just to familiarise yourself with it and have a good look at those photos too – I really hope you love making them as much as I have!

Pattern Notes
This is such a simple pattern – simply create two hearts using the pattern below, join, stuff then add a ruffle edging. There are lots of step by step photos included at the end of each section.
{Pattern Starts}
Using Yarn A, Make TWO:
Row 1: 12ch, 1dc in second ch from hook, 1dc into each of next 4 ch, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in next ch, 1dc in each of next 5 ch, turn. [12dc]
Row 2: 1ch (doesn’t count as st), 2dc in first st, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in ch2-sp, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, 2dc in last st, turn. [16dc]
Row 3: 1ch (doesn’t count as st), 2dc in first st, 1dc in each of next 7 sts, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in ch2-sp, 1dc in each of next 7 sts, 2dc in last st, turn. [20dc]

Row 5: 1ch (doesn’t count as st), 2dc in first st, 1dc in each of next 11 sts, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in ch2-sp, 1dc in each of next 11 sts, 2dc in last st, turn. [28dc]
Row 6: 1ch (doesn’t count as st), dc2tog (over first two sts), 1dc in each of next 12 sts, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in ch2-sp, 1dc in each of next 12 sts, dc2tog (over last two sts), turn. [28dc]
Row 7: Repeat Row 6 [28dc]
Row 8: Repeat Row 6 [28dc]
Row 9: 1ch (doesn’t count as st), dc2tog (over first two sts), dc2tog (over next two sts), 1dc in each of next 10 sts, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in ch2-sp, 1dc in each of next 10 sts, dc2tog (over next two sts), dc2tog (over last two sts), turn. [26dc]
Row 10: 1ch (doesn’t count as st), dc2tog (over first two sts), dc2tog (over next two sts), 1dc in each of next 9 sts, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in ch2-sp, 1dc in each of next 9 sts, dc2tog (over next two sts), dc2tog (over last two sts), turn. [24dc]
Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
Joining
Now join both hearts by placing them together and working your yarn through the stitches of both pieces as follows: (don’t forget to leave a gap for stuffing)
Holding both hearts together, re-join yarn to last st worked (working down the side of heart) 1dc into each of the 12 sts, 3dc into ch2-sp (tip of heart), 1dc into each of next 12 sts, work 9dc evenly around the curve of heart (finishing where the remaining chain loops are), 1dc into each of next 4 foundation chain loops, dc3tog (over the next 3 chain loops), 1dc in each of the last 4 foundation chain loops, (stuff your heart) work 9dc evenly around the second curve of heart, join with a sl st to first dc. [51dc]
Ruffles
A note on ruffles: the ruffles are created by working 3 sts into each st around. If you find your ruffles are flattening out a bit around the curves at the top of your heart, feel free to add some extra stitches in, for example, 4tr into each stitch over 5 sts.
Rnd 1: Using yarn B, re-join yarn to any st, ch3 (counts as 1tr), 2tr in same st, 3tr into each st around, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch3. Fasten off yarn B, weave in ends.
Hanging Loop
If you’d like to add a crochet hanging loop, just attach your yarn around the centre stitch of the joining round (not the ruffle round), ch15 and re-join with a sl st. (see photo indicated stitch)
