Free Crochet Pattern – Wall Hanging
I’ve been so taken with all the beautiful Wall Hangings I’ve seen online recently. I made a crochet sampler wall hanging a few years ago and it gave me such joy I decided to try another one…

Anyway, I seem to have acquired a small amount of enamel pins recently so I thought a wall hanging would be a fabulous way to display them in my office.

I experimented with some new Katia yarns (Malibu and Louisiana) I found in my local yarn shop and I really enjoyed using them in the border and for the fringe of the wall hanging. If you’d like to see more of the finished wall hanging and the yarns I used I am talking about it in episode 15 of my YouTube podcast that you can view here.
I have written the pattern up below and added some step by step photos if you’d like to have a go. It’s a very simple pattern so perfect for beginners and a brilliant project for using up leftover yarn.
Crochet Wall Hanging
Yarn: Sirdar Cotton rich aran, 60% Cotton/ 40% Acrylic (100g/200m/219yds) 1 ball, Shade: Cream
Substitute Yarn: Approx 40g of any aran weight cotton will do
Hook: 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
Other items: Yarn needle, wooden dowel (approx 9.5″ long no wider than 1/2″) or twig, scissors
(You can shop my favourite tools here)
Gauge: Not important for this project.
Finished Size: Wall hanging is approx. 22cm (8.5”) wide, 35cm (14″) deep – to point.
Stitches/Abbreviations Used:
st(s) – stitch(es)
sp(s) – space(s)
ch – chain
ch-sp – chain space
sl st – slip stitch
dc – double crochet (US sc)
tr – treble crochet (US dc)
Pattern:
Row 1: Ch2, 1dc into second ch from hook, turn.(1dc)
Row 2: Ch1 (does not count as st) 3dc, turn. (3dc)
Row 3: Ch1 (does not count as st) 2dc in first st, 1dc, 2dc in last st, turn. (5dc)
Row 4: Ch1 (does not count as st) 2dc in first st, 1dc in each st up to last st in row, 2dc in last st, turn. (7dc)
Rows 5 – 17: Repeat row 4.
{Your stitch count should increase by 2 sts each row. Once you have finished row 17 you should have 33dc.}
Row 18: Ch1 (does not count as st), 1dc in each st along, turn. (33dc)
Rows 19 – 50: Repeat row 18 (32rows)
Row 51: Ch4 (counts as 1tr, 1ch), miss 1st, 1tr in next st, *ch1, miss 1st, 1tr in next st; repeat from * to end of row, turn. (17tr, 16 ch-1 sps)
Row 52: Ch1 (does not count as st), 1dc in each st and ch-1 sp along {working the last dc into the 3rdchain of the ch-4 turning chain from the previous row}, turn. (33dc)
Row 53 – Handle: Ch50, sl st into first dc of row 52, fasten off weave in ends.
Edging:
{If you are using two different yarns for your edge, as I have, you will need to go down a yarn size or two, otherwise your work will plucker…for example I have worked my edge in the Katia Malibu and a black 4 ply cotton}
Joining yarn to edge of row 50 work 1dc for every row along edge of wall hanging. Work 2dc in corners and 3dc in point. (See photo)
Block if needed, you can also use a light spray of starch if you’d like to stiffen the wall hanging
Tassels:
For the tassels cut 4 lengths of yarn approx. 35cm in length for each dc along the bottom of the wall hanging.
Join by folding yarn strands in half, inserting hook into stitch and pulling a loop through, pull remaining strands through loop and pull tightly. (See photos) Continue for each st along bottom edge of wall hanging.
Finishing:
Thread a wooden dowel or twig from the garden (approx. 1 inch wider than hanging) in and out of the treble stitches at the top of the hanging – starting from behind the first treble.
Decorate wall hanging with surface crochet or simple embroidery stitches if you’d like.
Let me know if you do make one and if you’d like to share your finished project on Instagram you can use the hashtag #lululovescrochet and I will be able to see it.
Have a lovely weekend.
Bye for now,
Em xx
