I’ve been busy making bits and pieces for Christmas, one of my favourites has been this crochet granny square Christmas tree pot holder…

Christmas Tree Pot-holder Tutorial

…I meant to post a tutorial for this last week but I felt myself slowing down as the week went on and I finally succumbed to illness at the weekend. I also discovered that in my fog I had been taking pictures, as I made it up, without a memory card in the camera!  So I apologise for the very basic tutorial but it was very simple to make so I’ll talk you through it and if you have any questions feel free to ask…

Crochet Granny Square Christmas Tree Pot Holder

Tools needed:

Yarn: Cotton 4ply in at least 2 colours

Hook: 3/3.5mm

Scissors & tapestry needle

♥ Make up 6 granny squares and join them in rows of 3, 2 & 1 (see photo below). 

♥ Add 3 rows of treble crochet (US DC) to each stitch of the middle square

♥ Join the 3 rows to make a tree shape using a tapestry needle and some of the white yarn – I used a whip stitch to join mine

♥ Do all the above once more for your second side – I used different colours for the squares, but kept the final row white.

♥ Once you have two sides put them wrong sides together and join by working a double crochet into each stitch (US SC) around the edges in the red yarn (make sure you work through both pieces add extra stitches in the corners)

♥ To make the hook loop I attached the red yarn to the middle of the top square and chained 12, I then worked a double crochet in each stitch back down the chain and sewed both ends to the pot-holder to create a loop.

I also made this very cute crochet cover for our mini Christmas tree pot. The black plastic one it came in was bugging me and I didn’t have a pot big enough to put it in. Again it was very simple – just rows of treble crochets, finished with some scallops – but I love how it looks.

After being so slow last week I now feel very behind in all the Christmas preparations; I’ve not yet wrapped any presents, iced the cake or worked out how to fit an extra table and chairs into our dining room!
