Just before Christmas the very sweet Michelle from Scaapi sent me some samples of lovely hand dyed cottons. Scaapi distribute beautiful yarns from South Africa, they work with small companies that create stable employment for their local community.  Such a lovely company ethos. I received some super samples amongst which was some MoYa cotton yarn in the most beautiful pastel colours…

It was whispering at me to be made into something beautiful. I loved the colours together and the grey and blues reminded me of the sky on those days before spring. You know the ones; where the sky is grey but the palest of blue is peaking between the clouds. Those late winter days, where everything carries with it the promise of blues skies and warmth. With those images in my mind I created this sweet ornamental potholder. It is double layered so the back peaks through the grey and cream and to me it sums up the anticipation of spring.

I really enjoyed working with the MoYa yarn, so soft and easy to work. It has definitely sparked an interest in working with more hand dyed yarns.

I’ve added the pattern here for you to try if you’d like to have a go. There are some photos at the end of the pattern if you are having any trouble with stitch placement. 

Hint of spring crochet Pot Holder pattern

Hook: 4mm (shop my favourites here)

Gauge: Not necessary for this project, my potholder measured 21cm x 21cm

Yarn: Any DK Cotton yarn should be suitable I’ve used:

Moya Harmony DK 100% Cotton, 50g/130m in shades:

Yarn A: natural

Yarn B: Silver

Yarn C: Candyfloss

Yarn D: Teal

Pattern is written in UK Terms US abbriviations are as follows:

Pattern:

Front

In Yarn A: 6ch, join with a sl st to make a ring

Rnd 1: 1ch, 8dc into ring, join with a sl st to first dc (8dc)

Rnd 2: 6ch (counts as 1tr, 3ch), (1tr, 3ch) into each dc around (8tr)

Rnd 3: Sl st into next ch-3sp, 3ch, 2tr (into ch-3sp), 3ch, (3tr, 3ch) into each ch-3sp around, join with a sl st to top of initial ch-3 (8 groups of 3tr)

Rnd 4: Sl st into next tr (middle tr), ch1, 1dc,* (1tr, 2dtr, ch3, 2dtr, 1tr) into next ch3-sp, skip 1tr, 1dc into next tr; repeat from * around, join with a sl st to first dc of rnd.

Switch to yarn B

Rnd 5: Join yarn B to any ch-3 sp, 1ch, *1dc, 1ch, (1dtr, ch2, 1dtr) in next dc, 1ch, (3dtr, 3ch, 3dtr) in next ch-3sp, 1ch, (1dtr, ch2, 1dtr) in next dc, 1ch; repeat from 3 more times, join with a sl st to first dc of rnd.

Rnd 6: * 3ch (counts as tr), 2tr in same st, 1tr in next ch-1 sp, 3tr in ch-2 sp, 1tr in next ch-1 sp, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in corner ch-3 sp, 1tr in next ch-1 sp, 3tr in ch-2 sp, 1tr in next ch-1 sp; repeat 3 more times (replacing initial 3ch for 1tr), join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off yarn B.

Switch to yarn A

Rnd 7: Join yarn A to any corner space, ch3 (counts as tr), (1tr, ch2, 2tr) in same sp, 1tr in each of next 19sts, *(2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next corner sp, 19tr; repeat twice more, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3, Fasten off yarn A. (92tr) 

Rnd 8: Join yarn B to any corner space, ch3 (counts as tr), (1tr, ch2, 2tr) in same sp, 1tr in each of next 23sts, *(2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next corner sp, 23tr; repeat twice more, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3, Fasten off yarn B, weave in ends. (108tr)

Back

Beginning ch-3s count as 1tr

In yarn C: 4ch, join with sl st to create a ring (or create a magic circle if you’d prefer)

Rnd 1: 3ch, 11tr into ring, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (12tr)

Rnd 2: 3ch, 1tr in same st, 2tr in each st around, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (24tr)

Rnd 4: 3ch, 2tr in next st, *1tr, 2tr; repeat form * around, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3, (36tr)

Rnd 5: 3ch, 1tr in next st, 2tr in next st, *1tr, 1tr, 2tr; repeat from * around, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3, fasten off yarn C. (48tr)

Join yarn D between any two trebles, work between stitches for this round only.

Rnd 6: 4ch, (counts as 1dtr), (1dtr, 2ch, 2dtr) in same sp, *3tr, 1htr, 3dc, 1htr, 3tr, (2dtr, 2ch, 2dtr) in next sp; repeat from * twice more, 3tr, 1htr, 3dc, 1htr, 3tr, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-4 (60sts)

Working into stitches from here on

Rnd 7: 3ch, 1tr into next st, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) into corner sp, *1tr in each of next 15 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) into corner sp; repeat from * twice more, 1tr into each of next 13 sts, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (76 sts)

Rnd 8: 3ch, 1tr into next 3 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) into corner sp, *1tr in each of next 19 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) into corner sp; repeat from * twice more, 1tr into each of next 15 sts, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (92 sts)

Rnd 9: 3ch, 1tr into next 5 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) into corner sp, *1tr in each of next 23 sts, (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) into corner sp; repeat from * twice more, 1tr into each of next 17 sts, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off yarn D, weave in ends. (108 sts)

Joining

With right sides facing outwards, place both squares together and join yarn C (working through both pieces) in any tr after a corner space. 1ch, *1dc, 1dc in each of next 26 sts, 3dc in corner sp; repeat from * around, 3dc in last corner sp. No not fasten off.

Handle

8ch, turn, skip 3dc, join with a sl st, 1ch, turn, 12dc back over ch-8 loop, join with a sl st, fasten off, weave in ends.
