Hello! Just popping in today to share this very simple V-stitch crochet cowl and wrist warmers pattern.  I designed this pattern around three years ago now when it was featured in my Inside Crochet Column – doesn’t time fly! 

Anyway, it really is a beautifully simple crochet pattern and perfect if you are a new to crochet or just fancy something quick and easy to make. The pattern is easily adaptable so make them as long/wide as you wish.  

 

While I was searching my files for the pattern I came across these photos I had taken of the original cowl and wrist warmers. Just look at how small Teddy was….awww they made me smile so much!

 

Simple V-Stitch Cowl and Wrist Warmers

Yarn:  I originally designed this pattern using Artesano Aran (50% superfine alpaca, 50% Peruvian highland wool), but any aran weight wool will do. I have recently been making these in Rico Essentials Alpaca chunky using a 5.5mm hook so just play with whatever yarn/hook you want and adjust the starting chain to fit.

Pattern written in UK crochet terms.

Cowl and wrist warmers are worked in unturned rounds. You can add a new colour each round by joining it in the last sl stitch of the round you have just worked or if easier just begin as in round 1 with a chain 4 and 1 treble in the same stitch.

The length of the cowl can be modified by adjusting the starting chain in multiples of 3 and the height by working more or less rounds.

 

Pattern Starts:

 

Cowl:

Ch103, join with a sl st to ch-1 – making sure not to twist the chain.

 

Rnd 1: 4ch (counts as 1tr,1ch), 1tr in same st, *miss 2ch, (1tr,ch1,1tr) in next st; rep from * along, miss last 2ch, join with a sl st to ch-3 of beg ch-4, sl st into ch-1 sp. Do not turn.

 

Rnds 2 – 22: Rep rnd  1 – repeat until cowl is as long as you require.

 

Rnd 23: 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each st and ch-1 sp along, join with a sl st to first dc, finish off, weave in ends.

 

Flower:

Rnd 1: Into a magic loop, 3ch (counts as tr), 11tr, join with a sl st to top of ch-3.

 

Rnd 2: Working in front loops only, 2ch (counts as 1htr), *4dtr in next st, 1htr in next; rep from * 4 times, 4dtr in last st, join with a sl st to top of ch-2, tie off. (6 petals)

 

Rnd 3: with flower facing you and working in remaining loops from rnd 2, 3ch (counts as tr) 1tr in same st, 2tr in each st around, join with a sl st to top of ch-3. (24tr)

 

Rnd 4 1ch, 1dc in same st, *2tr in each of next 3 sts, 1dc in next; rep from * four times, 2tr in each of last 3 sts, join with a sl st to first dc, finish off, weave in ends. (6 petals)

 

Wrist Warmers:

Make 2. To make wrist warmers wider or narrower to fit wrist adjust starting ch in multiples of 3.

 

Rnd 1: Using 5mm hook and yarn B, 27ch, join with a sl st to ch-1

 

Rnds 2-5: 3ch (counts as tr), 1tr into each st around, join with a sl st to top of ch-3.

 

Rnd 6: 4ch (counts as 1tr, 1ch) 1tr into same st, *miss 2 sts, (1tr, 1ch, 1tr) into next st; rep from * around, miss last sts, sl st into ch-3 of beg ch-4, sl st into ch-1 sp.

 

Rnds 7 – 11: Rep Rnds 6  (or until desired length).

 

Rnd 12: 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each st and ch-1 sp along, join with a sl st to first dc, finish off, weave in ends.
