Hello! I uploaded episode 6 of my crochet podcast earlier in the week in which I showed some lovely sparkle thread I bought from Love Crafts. It has inspired lots of festive Christmas crochet. I came up with these little crochet snowflake coasters and thought I would share the pattern here.

These are perfect December makes; they take very little time but look so lovely dotted around the house…I will be using mine for the Christmas table this year. You could even bundle up a batch of these with some Christmas coffee/tea as a last minute gift…gahhh I just love Christmas.

Crochet Snowflake Coasters Pattern

Yarn: Any white DK cotton (I’ve used Paintbox DK Cotton in shade Paper White) & metalic thread held together, I’ve used the ITO Kin Gin thread in gold but you could also use embroidery thread worked with your dk yarn. 

Some alternative metalic threads are Anchor Artiste Metallic and Bergere de France Metalika.

Hook: 4mm (you can shop my favourites here)

Other Materials: Scissors (these are my stork scissors) and tapestry needle.

Pattern written in UK crochet terms

Stitches used/Abbreviations:

Special Stitches:

Cluster Cl = Is essentially a tr3tog (treble 3 stitches together) and is worked as follows – *yarn over insert hook into space, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over pull through two loops (2 loops on hook); repeat from * twice more until you have 4 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.

Picot = A picot is created by chaining the number of stitches given in the pattern and slip stitching back into the first chain or the stitch directly below the chain (in this pattern you can use either method)

{Pattern Starts}

Round 1:

Working with the dk cotton and sparkle thread held together make a magic loop (or a chain loop if you prefer).

Ch2 (counts as first tr of cl) *cl, ch3; repeat from * 5 more times, join with a sl st to top of first cluster (6 clusters, 6 ch-3 loops)

Round 2:

Sl st into next ch3-sp, 3ch (counts as 1tr) (2tr, 3ch, 3tr) in ch3-sp, 1ch, *(3tr, 3ch, 3tr) in next ch3-sp, 1ch; repeat from * four more times, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3 (36tr)

Round 3:

Sl st into next ch3-sp, ch2 (counts as first tr in cl) *(cl, ch3, cl) in ch3-sp, 1ch, 1tr in ch1-sp, 1ch; repeat from * 5 more times, join with a sl st to first cluster. (42tr)

Round 4:

Ch1 (does not count as st), 1dc in same st, *(1dc, ch3, picot, 1dc, ch4, picot, 1dc, ch3, picot) into ch3-sp, 1dc in cluster, 1dc in ch1-sp, (1dc, ch3, picot) in tr, 1dc in next ch1-sp, 1dc in next cluster; repeat from * 5 more times, join with a sl st to first dc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Block by spraying with water and pinning if needed. If you want to stiffen them spray with starch or add a layer of watered down pva glue to back of coaster.
